Watermen’s Retreat is right in the center of one of the most wave rich coastlines in the northern hemisphere. Consistent, empty & often perfect waves are all within a short 10 minute walk.
Surfing like it used to be
If you’ve surfed anywhere else in the world, you’ll know how tough it is to get away from the crowd. Surfing for us is a little different. Grab a cooler, your boards and your friends and wander over the road from Watermen’s to enjoy some of the most consistent, fun and uncrowded surf on the east coast.
The Watermen’s Difference
Whether it’s your first time in the water or surfing is in your blood, our knowledgable team will arm you with expert advice (and a rental board if you need one) and help you score the best surf available.
- I’ve seen videos of huge waves there. Is it always like that?
Most of the time the waves here vary from waist high up to head high so it’s ideal for learning to surf. Of course we do get occasional days where its really big but that usually doesn’t last for more than 24 hours.
- What is the water temperature like?
The water varies an enormous amount throughout the year. In June, July, August and September, you don’t need a wetsuit at all. In April, May, October and November, you’ll need a 3/2 wetsuit and during December, January, February and March you’ll need a winter wetsuit with boots and gloves too.
- What kind of boards do you have available to rent?
We’ve got a wide range of shortboards, funboards and longboards available. If you’re planning on renting a board and would like to reserve a specific model in advance or check out our inventory, please call the REAL Rental Shop on 252-987-6000.
- How will I know where to go?
All of the breaks here are sand bottom and sand does shift around over time. That means that the best spots change frequently so it’s fortunate that our team is in the water almost every day and know where all the best spots are. We would be stoked to point you in the right direction to help you make the most of your time here.
